Located in historic downtown Harrisonburg Virginia, Shen-Valley Band Instrument Service Inc. has been serving the central Shenandoah Valley and surrounding areas for over 59 years. We are a full line dealer for Conn-Selmer, Yamaha, Ludwig, Gemeinhardt, Fox, Buffet, and Cerveny. We rent, sell, service and repair all of our instruments. We provide woodwinds, brasswinds, concert percussion and repair service for over 40 elementary, middle and high schools, James Madison University, Eastern Mennonite University, Bridgewater College, and Mary Baldwin College.
After a tour of duty in the U.S. Army in WWII, Willard Dovel attended the Conn Vocational School in Elkhart Indiana. After graduation in March of 1946, Willard went to work for Miles Music in Harrisonburg. In 1951, Willard’s desire to own his own business was realized when he, his wife Ruth, along with help from long time friend and Army buddy, Henry Mohler, opened Shen-Valley Band Instrument Service, Inc. on North Liberty Street where the business has been located ever since.
Son, Gary Dovel apprenticed under his father from the age of 12. After Willard’s death in 1978, Gary and Ruth continued to run the business until 1987, when Gary and his wife, Martha took over the business.
After the untimely death of Gary and Martha in 2007, the business was passed on to the children, Julie Paul, Eric Dovel, and Scott Dovel. Julie’s husband, Allen Paul now oversees the day to day operation of the business as store manager.
After 59 years Shen-Valley Band remains a family business committed to serving and supporting our local community of musicians, schools, colleges, and all music lovers for years to come.
